A Brief history of the December Daily concept

A few years ago, the December Daily concept pinged on my radar.  December daily is a concept started by Ali Edwards in 2007.  The concept is based on memory keeping, or ‘telling a story’ for every day in December leading up to Christmas.  It generally involves elements of scrap booking, pictures, thoughts etc. (you can find more here:

While the concept of a December daily is a great, I’ve never actually participated or made my own.  What I find more intriguing is the various journals and items people create to make their own December Daily.

Paper crafting on a weeknight

For any of you that have watched my channel, I really shouldn’t craft on a weeknight after work.  I always tend to get super frazzled and discombobulated (and it shows in the video).  But when I get an idea, it just keeps tapping at my brain until I get it out.   I wanted to create an easy Traveler’s Notebook (TN) that could be used for a December Daily made out of simple and readily accessible items.

This is one of those ideas.  I’m sure this style and process has been done before, but in my YouTube video, I go through each step of the process as well as chat about options and ways to customize your product.  Below, you’ll find the dimensions I used to create the various pieces.

Some of the supplies I used:

Insert #1 (Stapled)

The number of pages is up to you.  As mentioned in the video, depending on the weight/thickness of your paper times the number of papers you use can create a thin or chunky TN Insert.

  • Insert dimensions: 8.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches high (fold in half for the insert)
  • Matting sheets: 4 inches wide by 5.25 inches high (this leaves a 1/4 inch border around the mat).  The number of matting sheets needed depends on the number of pages you want covered.

Insert #2 (Glued)

  • Insert dimensions: 8.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches high (fold in half for the insert)
  • Matting sheets: 4.25 inches wide by 5.5 inches high (no border and will be exact size of the insert).  # of matting sheets needed is 2 (if you’re using single sided paper).

Traveler’s Notebook Cover

  • 6 inches high by 11 inches wide
  • Score at 4.5 inches, 5 inches, 9.5 inches, and 10 inches
  • Matting sheets: 4 pieces of 5.75 inch high x 4.25 inch wide sheets (this size will leave a 1/4 inch border)
  • Flap closure panel: 1 piece of 5.75 inch high x .75 inch wide (this size will leave a 1/4 inch border)
